Avellanas Surfing

Avellanas is a surfer's paradise. Not only is the spot gorgeous, but the location—a mere 25 minutes south of Tamarindo—offers something for everybody.

Right in front of the parking lot is an outside reef that works best during an incoming low tide. Next is a long stretch of beach breaks going left and right, producing hollow barrels on head high and larger swells. On smaller swells, the waves on the beach breaks are perfect for beginners.

At the north end of the beach, the river mouth produces a reef break over its rocky bottom during a low, incoming tide. Past the estuary, Little Hawaii, named for obvious reasons, produces a fast, hollow waves for veteran surfers.
